How these pages are made
Where the figures come from
US figures come from the Social Security Administration's national baby-name files, 1880 to 2025. French figures come from INSEE's national first-name file, 1900 to 2025. England and Wales ranks come from the ONS, Irish ranks from the CSO. A name enters the catalog only when one of these sources, or Wikidata, shows it is real.
How the numbers are computed
- Rank counts all spellings of a name together (Sophia and Sofia are one family), so a rank can differ slightly from the official per-spelling lists.
- 1 in N divides all births of the year by this spelling's births.
- 10-year change compares the family's births now with ten years earlier, lightly smoothed so tiny names do not swing wildly.
- Projection continues the family's recent trend five years forward and ranks it among that year's projected names. It is an estimate, not a promise.
- Class odds are the chance that at least one of 24 classmates born the same year shares the name, if names were spread evenly across the country.
- The curve shows births per million in each decade. The 2020s cover 2020 to 2025.
- The colour of each name comes from how it sounds: its stressed vowel sets the hue. Origin and ethnicity are never used.
How AI helps
Meanings, style matches and some sentences are drafted with AI models from the facts above. Every number on a page is checked in code against the source data before the page is published, and people review a sample of every batch. If you spot a mistake, tell us and we'll fix it.
